WILFRED Mashaya’s Zim Ninja Academy appears to have mastered the art of navigating its way around the Covid-19 pandemic with consistent performances in virtual competitions.
Their latest dive into virtual weapons tournaments came at the recent Open World Championships hosted by Poland.
There, the academy brought home 38 medals, mainly comprised of 21 gold, 13 silver and four bronze.
The Kobudo tournament attracted 150 participants from as many as 10 countries.
These included China, England, Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Scotland, USA, Zimbabwe and the hosts Poland.
The academy side received their medals on Wednesday, with Wilfred Mashaya Junior, Prince Manhanga, Mitchell Rudanda, Vincent Fambira, Fredson Mhondiwa, Wilfred Mashaya senior winning two gold medals each.
The likes of Tinokudzaishe Hondo, Daniel Basikoro, Virginia Chihuri, Wilson Kawinga, Blessed Kanda, Tatenda Mapigoti, Solomon Mandongwe, Munashe Gumbo and Peter Murapa round off the gold medallists.
Nobert Murungu, Thandiwe Chirindo, Brian Shepeni, Benjamin Chinondiwana, Nigel Dutiro are among the fighters that won silver and bronze medals.
Zim Ninja Academy has so far participated in over 10 virtual competitions since the pandemic began and their medal count is well over 100.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, Zim Ninja Academy secretary-general Christopher Garatsa said there is more to come from the weapons specialist academy.
“As the Poland Championships marks their first tournament this year, the Zim Ninja Academy looks forward to a greater and more fruitful 2022 season.
“We are on a mission to raise the country’s flag high in the world of Kobudo,” said Garatsa.
