NEW: Zim on high alert over cholera

Zimbabwe is on high alert, following reported cases of an outbreak of cholera in a number of SADC countries.  

Addressing Tuesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, acting Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere said:  

“Considering the high risk of diarrheal diseases, especially cholera and typhoid during the rainy season, the Government is accelerating the surveillance and response mechanisms in all provinces.”  

Minister Muswere said the Government is also instituting processes for the refurbishing and upgrading of sewer and reticulation systems, and provision of clean water.  

Within the SADC region, countries that have recorded cases of cholera include Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa.  

In Zimbabwe, 60 suspected cases of cholera have been reported since February 12 2023. 

And as at March 6 2023, the country has not recorded any hospital admissions or reported deaths from cholera.
