ZIMBABWE has made significant progress in controlling infant and child mortality through its vaccination programmes.
Speaking during a media immunisation briefing on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health and Child Care health promotion manager for emergency programme immunisation, Mr Norman Dzirambi, said Government’s vaccination programmes were bearing fruit.
“The country has managed to control infant mortality and child mortality,” he said.
“If you look at the statistics that we always push through different surveys and demographic surveys, our child mortality is going down gradually, and immunisation is the key intervention that has assisted in that regard.”
UNICEF nutrition specialist Kudzai Mukudoka-Mudukuti said Vitamin A is important for child growth.
“From six months, breast milk is no longer adequate to give nutrients, especially Vitamin A, that a baby needs,” she said.
“This now needs to be done through a regular process and we are now giving Vitamin A capsules as drops from six months.”
