Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube has said they are working towards the removal of tax on assistive technology.

He was speaking during commemorations of the World Day for Assistive Technology in Harare yesterday.

“This global initiative aims to raise awareness about the significance of assistive technology and its impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities,” he said.

“We are working towards removing tax on assistive devices.

“The launch of the National Assistive Technology Strategy (2024 – 2025) and the Assistive Products Priority List underscores the country’s commitment to addressing the pressing issue of access to assistive technology.

According to the WHO-UNICEF Global Report on Assistive Technology (2022), a staggering 2.5 billion people are in need of one or more assistive devices.

Only about 3 percent of individuals in low and middle-income countries such as Zimbabwe have access to these crucial tools, with even lower access rates in certain geographical areas.

This lack of access significantly impacts fundamental rights such as freedom of movement and the right to education
