THIS year’s wheat harvest has already surpassed last year’s record production of 562 091 tonnes, with output now topping 578 059 tonnes from 110 543 hectares of the 122 566ha that were planted, Government has announced.
The remaining 12 023ha will be harvested by the first week of November.
The annual national wheat requirement currently stands at 360 000 tonnes.
In a statement, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka said Zimbabwe has now become one of the two wheat self-sufficient countries in Africa.
“Zimbabwe is poised to register another record wheat production during the 2025 season. From a modest volume of 94 685 tonnes in 2019 to 562 091 in 2024, Zimbabwe is only one of two jurisdictions on the African continent that have become wheat self-sufficient,” said Minister Masuka.
“During the current season, cumulatively 578 059 tonnes have been harvested, from 110 543ha. The volume already surpasses our last year’s record production of 562 091 tonnes …”

While there is no need to import wheat, Minister Masuka said, the import of the higher gluten content wheat that is not locally produced but is required by some millers will continue without any additional cost.
The stability of wheat product prices is, therefore, expected to continue.
Government also congratulated the 16 362 farmers that produced wheat during the 2025 season.
