NEW: ZRP to get four new helicopters

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is set to receive four helicopters, a development expected to support the institution’s fight against crime.

Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube announced the plans to Parliament last week, during the budget debate with legislators.

He said the Government has plans to significantly improve conditions of service for ZRP, starting with mobility.

“We have sourced US$60 million for purposes of purchasing cars, as well as motor-cycles for the police, including four helicopters.

“That procurement is underway now, and they will receive their cars and will be mobile,” said Minister Ncube.

He said beyond transport, the Government is continuing with a long-term plan to provide decent accommodation for all police officers.

“On the issue of institutional accommodation, that is a multi-programme.

“We have tried hard. Looking at the Tomlinson Depot facility; in fact, this year alone, we budgeted $230 million, and it should be complete,” said Minister Ncube.

He said an additional $50 million has been allocated to Buchwa Police Camp. The money will be used to build a permanent police camp and additional accommodation for officers in the area.
