MINISTER of State for Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa has urged community leaders to join hands in combating drug and substance abuse, describing it as a scourge threatening the moral fabric of the country.
In a speech read on his behalf at Kuwadzana 6 Shopping Centre on Wednesday during a campaign organised by Harare City Council and partners, Senator Tawengwa emphasised that collective effort was required to address the crisis.
“We gather here with one voice, one mission, one purpose — to serve our youth, protect our communities and build a future free from the scourge of drugs,” he said.
“This is not just a Government programme; it is a people’s movement.”

Sen Tawengwa warned that drug and substance abuse was no longer a distant issue but a present danger across homes, schools, streets and neighbourhoods.
“It threatens the very foundation of our families, the health of our communities and the future of our nation,” he said.
“We cannot afford to ignore the signs or remain complacent.”
Minister Tawengwa also commended First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa for her leadership in spearheading the national campaign against drug abuse.
“At this moment, I would like to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to Her Excellency, the First Lady,” he said.
“She has been a torchbearer and a champion, a voice of reason in this national crisis. Her leadership exemplifies the spirit of resilience and hope that we need in these challenging times.”
The awareness campaign ran under the theme “Hachisi ChiGuy Kutora MaDrugs”, with the hashtag #MusatifenderePamadrugs: Maghetto Youths Taramba zvekutsomwa.
