Member of Parliament for Mhondoro Ngezi District, Bright Matonga, who initiated the staging of the tournament, wants to host even a bigger tournament next year.
“It’s an annual event that we do in Mhondoro Ngezi and it involves 30 Schools from the district.
“It is a big event meant to promote sport and we have Zimplats as the main sponsor giving back to the community and they have sponsored this year’s tournament to the tune of US$30 000.
“They provide transport, food and medical facilities with the main thrust of bringing people together as kids meet from different backgrounds and share notes and experiences. We want to develop it into something big and form a Ngezi Select team where we invite professional coaches to come and identify the players that will represent our province at national level.
“We want to come up with a Mashonaland West team that should be kept intact so that these players can also be considered when it comes to junior national team selection to represent the country.
“It’s getting a lot of attention from the people around as it is now on calendar every year and it has become something to look forward to and we have extended it to Kadoma to increase competition.
“I noticed other teams have no playing uniforms and it’s something we are going to look into so that we can provide kits for the teams,” said Matonga.
Because of the success of the Mhondoro tournament Chegutu RDC, NASH and Zimplats decided to have another event in Chegutu today with soccer and Netball being the main attractions.
