Ngezi Platinum came from a goal down to register their second win of the season in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League against Green Fuel at Gibbo Stadium yesterday.
The premiership newcomers showed early intent as they searched for their first win of the season, and striker Ashford Nyamajiwa scored with a thunderbolt of a shot inside the opening six minutes.
The lead did not last long.
Ngezi’s Marvelous Mukumba flighted a perfect cross that was connected by Takunda Benhura in the 16th minute, giving Chris Mverechena no chance from close range.
Benhura, who had a very good day in the office, drew another great save from Mverechena after connecting a Nigel Makumbe cross in the 40th minute.
However, just before half time, Ngezi captain Qadr Amini curled a beautiful free-kick beyond Mverechena’s reach.
This gave the visitors a slender lead at the break.
Ngezi Platinum found the winner seven minutes into the second half.
Man-of-the-match Benhura completed his brace by doing justice to a fantastic cross by Walter Vuwa.
Mukumba demonstrated his worth in the Ngezi midfield by controlling the tempo of the game and passing the ball around to sap the energy out of the home side.
Green Fuel, however, reduced arrears with a well-taken shot by Reginald Chinemo in the 72nd minute.
But Ngezi held on to the very end and walked away with the full set of points to maintain their unbeaten start.
Green Fuel coach Bhekitemba Ndlovu was devastated.
“It’s another disappointing result,” said Ndlovu.
“We started on the high note, scoring an early goal, but I always tell the boys that the most dangerous time is soon after scoring.
“We conceded an easy goal and our defending was not good.
“Two points from six games is not good, and if we don’t wake up, and see the bigger picture, it will be difficult to come out of this position.”
Ngezi head coach Takesure Chiragwi was happy with his charges.
“It’s not easy travelling more than three thousand kilometres in ten days.
“However, I am happy the guys kept on fighting for the points under the difficult circumstances.
“We have now passed the phase of not winning, and we are looking forward to our next match at home against ZPC Kariba,” he said.
