UNITED Kingdom-based musician Ngonidzashe Kambarami has expressed concern over the rising cases of drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe, particularly among youths in high-density suburbs.

The 42-year-old artiste, who was in the country recently visiting family and reconnecting with his roots, said he was distressed by what he witnessed in his childhood communities, Mabvuku and Tafara in Harare
“I was back home for a month and managed to visit Mabvuku and Tafara, where I was raised, but I was shocked by the extent of drug and substance abuse I saw and heard about,” he said.

Kambarami, known for his contribution to urban groove music in the early 2000s, said the situation requires urgent, collective intervention.
“I might not have enough resources to build rehabilitation centres, but I want to use my voice and influence to campaign against this. We need to speak out, engage these young people and let them know they are valued and not forgotten,” he said.

The musician said he interacted with several youths during his visit and realised that many of them are battling addiction, unemployment, and frustration.
“If these issues are happening at your doorstep or in your neighbourhood, the impact hits differently. The current generation needs to be saved. I was really touched,” he added.

Kambarami, who continues to record and perform from the UK, said he intends to work with local community leaders, churches and youth organisations to raise awareness and promote alternatives to drug abuse.

He said reversing the trend requires unity, compassion and sustained outreach rather than criticism or neglect.
