THE National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) is inviting tenders for the refurbishment of their gallery in Victoria Falls into a one-stop arts hub.
Under the new development, the arts hub, which is based in Chinotimba suburb, will be given a facelift meant to attract tourists.
A new block and workshop will also be established, according to NGZ chiefs.
In an interview with H-Metro, after running the tender notice, NGZ executive director, Raphel Chikukwa, outlined their vision.
“In line with the National Development Strategy 1, the main purpose of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Victoria Falls is to achieve the devolution agenda, to also expand the National Gallery of Zimbabwe into Matabeleland North Province and most importantly to turn Victoria Falls into a cultural hub because of its tourist traffic.
“The gallery will be in Chinotimba, in its first and second phase, we will turn Choghm Park into a Sculpture Park right in the City of Victoria Falls,” said Chikukwa.
The veteran curator and arts administrator said they were also working with the local authorities.
“We are grateful for the partnership with the City of Victoria Falls and we welcome those that want to contribute and turn Victoria Falls into acultural hub.
“The renovations of the Chinotimba house are key and the total cost of the whole project we are looking at is over US$300 000.
“Early May, we are doing the site visit with potential contractors and we are hoping by next year the gallery should open.”
Quizzed on the response of bidders to undertake the project, Chikukwa said:
“As you already see, the advert just went out this weekend and we are expecting to get responses.
“The locals who are going to benefit are artists, crafters and tour companies.
“It’s our hope that by opening of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, tourists can stay an extra day so all communities can benefit, including hotels,” he said.
The NGZ executive director hailed the local community and various partners for their cooperation.
“There is time for everything and we are very grateful to the City of Victoria Falls who did buy into our idea. “On behalf of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe board, management and the entire national gallery, I cannot thank the city enough.
“Our Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation, your support is a game changer not only for the Zimbabwean art scene but for the African Art scene.”
Chikukwa said the NGZ will continue working hard to ensure they promote and preserve local culture.
