THREE Bulawayo scrap collectors were left bloodied and bruised after a brutal robbery ambush near Ngozi Mine in Cowdray Park, all for a handful of dollars and cellphones.

The violent attack happened around 8PM on Sunday, 18 May. The victims aged 32, 37, and 39 were walking along a dusty unnamed road from Ngozi Mine after collecting scrap metal for recycling. The trio was enjoying some beer when they were suddenly pounced on by two shadowy figures armed with blunt objects.
“They came from behind and struck us down before we even knew what hit us,” one of the shaken victims told police.

Police say the first man was struck at the back of the head and robbed of a Huawei P30 and US$50. The second was hit on the shoulder and lost his Samsung Galaxy A04E, while the third was bashed on the head and relieved of his black satchel.
“I just remember seeing stars… they didn’t care if they killed us,” another victim said.

All three were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, nursing cuts, bruises, and back pain. The robbers made off with loot worth US$208. Nothing has been recovered.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.
“We strongly urge the public to avoid isolated routes, especially at night. These areas are increasingly becoming hotspots for violent crime,” warned Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.

Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the assailants is urged to contact the nearest police station.
