Nine varsities turn up for Chancellor’s Games

Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) opened their account with a 4-22 loss to the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in netball, but Chipo Mukumba was to inspire her team to bounce back with a 17-10 win over Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) after scoring 12 points.
Chinhoyi State University’s (CUT) netball team had a great start as they dismissed the hosts Nust 29-10 and Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) 37-10 in group games that were played yesterday.

The Midlands State University (MSU) also had a good start in netball as they beat ZOU 35-4 and UZ       25-14.

In men’s soccer it was a different story for MSU as they lost 1-0 to both ZOU and UZ while CUT won 3-0 against GZU and drew 1-1 with Nust.

These were some of the games that were played yesterday together with volleyball in the group stage. This stage will be finished today before the semi-finals start.

Albert Mnkandla, the national organising committee secretary-general said they were happy that the Chancellor of State Universities President Mugabe had afforded this opportunity to play the staff games.

“We are grateful that we were recognised as staff members of state universities to come and mix and mingle off the pressure of our daily jobs in sport. We are happy that we were given this opportunity to come and experience the lighter side of our work away from marking, lecturing or other work that we do as university staff members.

“We hope this will happen in all the coming years to keep us fit and healthy so that we are even more effective in our jobs,” said Mnkandla.
The theme of the games is “Promoting Unity and Diversity Through Sports.”
Indoor games of pool, darts, chess and table tennis were expected to start yesterday evening.
