IN a disturbing incident, a female student at Nketa High School in Bulawayo reportedly committed suicide by hanging after her boyfriend allegedly rejected her pregnancy.

The girl (name withheld) who was reportedly doing Form Four was impregnated by her boyfriend who is reportedly an Upper Six student at the same school. She was reportedly buried on Monday in a sombre atmosphere shared by friends, classmates, relatives and neighbours.

According to sources, after several attempts to get to her boyfriend to accept her pregnancy, the girl who could not come to the fact that her boyfriend rejected her, resorted to committing suicide.

“She committed suicide on Friday last week (12 July) after realising that she was pregnant. It is said that when she confronted her boyfriend who is an Upper Six student at the same school to tell him about the pregnancy, the boy refused the responsibility, saying he doesn’t know anything and this is suspected to have triggered suicidal thoughts in her. On the day in question, her aunt who saw her entering the house where her boyfriend stayed became suspicious and followed her. Upon arrival, she found her naked before she took her back home where she later hanged herself,” said the source.

While Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, the circumstances surrounding the girl’s suicide, according to the police, however, did not indicate pregnancy.

“We confirm the sudden death case of a female adult of Nketa 9 Bulawayo who hanged herself. On the 12th of July 2024, at around 0800hrs, the now deceased left home to attend extra lessons at Nketa 8 High School but instead, she was seen entering a nearby house where her boyfriend stays. Her aunt followed her and found her naked, she took her back home. When they got home, she started doing her house chores. Her aunt told her to come and talk about what had happened after finishing her work,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

She said at around 11am, the deceased’s aunt noticed she had taken a long time to finish laundry in the bathroom. The aunt then called her, but there was no answer. Concerned, the aunt checked the bedroom and found she was not there.

“She went outside the house to check and saw her hanging on a guava tree branch in the yard and had froth on her mouth and she screamed for help.

“The neighbours who heard the screams rushed there and managed to cut the rope. They poured the now deceased some water trying to resuscitate her while calling for an ambulance. The ambulance crew pronounced her dead upon their arrival. A police report was made,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

Asst Insp Msebele urged children to obey their parents, concentrate on their schoolwork and avoid taking their own lives when faced with discipline or correction.
