NOTHING seems to take away the confidence that has glued within the Somvubu High School girls’ football teams this year, as they have shown that they can be counted among the best in the country.
The school, which is in Bubi District in Matabeleland North, has bagged another berth to represent the province at the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) girls’ Under 20 championships.
The same school is riding high, as they have two other teams, the girls and the boys Under 16s who will compete at national level as well.
In the Under-20 inter-district matches held at Siganda Secondary School last Friday, Somvubu beat Zwangendaba High School of Lupane 1-0, to advance to the national finals set for the Midlands Province on July 26.
There were seven schools representing the province’s districts, drawn into two groups. In Group A, there was Majiji, Guwe and Siganda Schools. Group B had Somvubu, Zwangendaba, Nyamandlovu and Dinyane Secondary School.
The champions first entered the field to face Zwangendaba, whom they beat 2-0. Dinyane High School were their next victims, scoring six goals with no reply. In their third match, Somvubu won 2-0 over Nyamandlovu.
They topped the group with nine points and qualified for the semifinals together with Zwangendaba.
In the opening matches of Group B, Majiji lost 1-0 to Guwe and went on to fall 3-0 to Siganda. Guwe and Siganda settled for a nil all stalemate. Siganda topped the group with four points with a superior goal difference and qualified for the semifinals.
In first semi-final, Somvubu beat Guwe 4-0, while Siganda fell 1-0 to Zwangendaba. Somvubu made light work on Zwangendaba, silencing them by a goal to nil to be crowned champions.
