adminannounce this year’s nominees, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe director Elvas Mari hinted that the organisation had not allocated monetary prizes for artistes, and was hoping that willing sponsors could chip in with cash in genres of their choice.
“Winning artistes will get a trophy and a certificate and when it comes to monetary prizes, it all depends on the sponsors who will decide whether they want to pour in money in categories of their choice.
“But we believe that the trophy and certificate will mean a lot to the artistes because winning the award will unlock doors of opportunities in the arts industry,” said Mari, while flanked by artiste Dudu Manhenga, who also sits on the NACZ board.
Meanwhile, Manhenga described the arts as an emerging giant of the Zimbabwean economy.
She also applauded local artistes for showing commitment to the industry, noting that this was reflected in the high number of artistes who had submitted their work for consideration.
“This year we have witnessed a 113 percent increase in submissions and the quality of work has been phenomenal.
“The arts have been described as the fourth pillar of the Zimbabwean economy,” she said.
Mari concurred with Manhenga, adding that the arts were gradually getting the recognition they deserved.
“We are grateful that people are recognising the value that Nama puts in the arts sector,” he said.
He revealed that Government had allocated US$30 000 for this year’s edition of the event.
