No hope for Mposa in Women’s Soccer League

EACH day brings misery to James Rugwevera and his Mposa Academy’s women’s football team that qualified for the national league.

The dawn of a new day brings closer the start of the season, and the cloud of uncertainty bothers the Mpopoma High School project.

“The girls’ dream is still to play in the women’s national league. We qualified on merit, and it would be a dream come true to play at that level. But as things stand, we look now most unlikely to. We need sponsorship to save the Gild Child from being frustrated back to the streets.

“Soccer has managed to save 40 girls who are actively involved in the club’s first team. They have a dream and want to play for the national teams and be professionals locally or abroad.

“As a club, we have done the best of what we could and wish the girls could parade their skills at a higher level than the Division One league,” said Rugwevera on Monday.

With an opening fixture against Highlanders Royals, Rugweveral said the city derby would have done them good to gauge their preparedness for the marathon.

The date for the league’s kick off, is yet to be concluded and close of registration which may favour Mposa as they try to confirm and secure partnerships that may see them play in the national women’s soccer league.

“It would really have been a crunch tie played before a decent crowd. Our girls would have got a chance to evaluate themselves going forward,” said Rugwevera.

The mathematics teacher cum football coach and administrator, hinted that a Harare deal may come on board.

“We have been talking for a while, nothing yet but should something materialize, the girls will play national league football. They have the strength to cause upsets,” said Rugwevera.
