Non-combatants, collaborators vetting almost complete

THE vetting process of non-combatants and war collaborators is almost complete and soon they will start getting benefits, Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Board chairperson, Major-General Gibson Mashingaidze has said.

This comes as it has emerged that some of the names that were submitted during the vetting process were non-existent in the Registrar-General’s database and now a verification process is underway to identify those who qualify for benefits.

While addressing war veterans in Mashonaland Central, Major-Gen Mashingaidze said everything is on course.

“The process is almost complete and anytime we expect non-combatants and war collaborators to start benefiting,” he said.

Some of the vetted cadres were not given confirmation receipts due to a shortage of material, but they are in the database and those with receipts are deemed qualified provisionally.

Maj-Gen Mashingaidze said the names of those who qualified will be printed in the Government Gazette once the verification process is complete.

He said those who could not be vetted despite the extension of the period should approach war veteran’s offices and leave their information.

War collaborators and ex-political prisoners who failed to qualify will be asked to bring their issues to the board.

“The vetting process was ground work and the verification process is underway. The issue of benefits will be announced after all the procedures, no decision has been made so far,” Maj-Gen Mashingaidze said.

“The only categories that are benefiting are war veterans and ex-political prisoners.”

Maj-Gen Mashingaidze said the purpose of the visit was to meet veterans of the struggle in Mashonaland Central and share with them their challenges and developments that have happened since the formation of the board.

“When we talk about war veterans we are talking of miserable, aged and sick people who never received counselling after the war,” he said.
