CHURCHES and corporates are critical partners in driving national development as demonstrated by ongoing community infrastructure projects in Norton, the Government has said.
Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo made the remarks on Tuesday while commissioning the refurbishment and upgrading of Ngoni Stadium by MWOS FC and the construction of Dambiza Road by Christ Citadel International Church.
The projects were undertaken in partnership with Norton Town Council and are part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and service delivery at community level.
Speaking at Christ Citadel International Church in Ngoni, Norton, Minister Chombo applauded the institutions for supporting the Second Republic’s development agenda guided by President Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind.
“Under the Second Republic, President Mnangagwa saw it fit for us to work with indigenous churches. This is one of the indigenous churches that has done great work, which we are commissioning today,” she said.
Minister Chombo said the construction of Dambiza Road was a significant milestone, noting that a reliable road network is essential for meaningful development.
“There is no development without a good road network. I thank you for that foresight. Motorists are now driving on a good road network,” she said.
She added that the improved road would also enhance local economic activity, including the upgrading of vending stalls and easier access to homes, schools, clinics and markets.
The Minister further commended Christ Citadel International Church for installing eight community water points and two water tanks in Ngoni, describing the initiative as a practical contribution to improved service delivery.
She also highlighted the church’s collaboration with Government in tackling drug and substance abuse, noting that churches play a vital role in safeguarding communities and guiding young people.
Turning to sport, Minister Chombo said the upgrading of Ngoni Stadium was a major boost for Norton and Mashonaland West Province.
She said MWOS FC partnered Norton Town Council to refurbish the facility following the club’s promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
“MWOS looked for a partner, Norton Town Council, and saw it fit to help upgrade and refurbish Ngoni Stadium,” she said.
The stadium, now with a seating capacity of more than 5 000, was upgraded within a short period.
Minister Chombo said MWOS FC invested between US$500 000 and US$600 000 in the project, underscoring the growing role of the private sector in supporting sport development and community upliftment.
