Norton Town Council chair wants Christmas lights for the town to be prioritised

Norton chairperson, Councillor Action Mataruse, said Christmas lights should be given the same treatment as tower lights.

Chairing a full council on Tuesday, Cllr Mataruse said tower lights have already been budgeted for in the 2026 budget and must not fail.

He had earlier requested to know how the budget would incorporate the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

“Last year, we agreed that this year everything would be in order so that we can light up the town,” he said.

“Other towns will be lit up except Norton. I don’t want to hear that this event (the Christmas lighting) has failed. It failed last year, and this year, it should not fail.”

Norton town secretary, Mr Kizito Muhomba, said he is optimistic that they will have a procurement plan after the strategic planning workshop.

He told the full council that after the 2026 budget, they will be able to work on a plan.
