A MUTARE drug dealer was apprehended with 24 bottles of Benylin cough syrup, thanks to the police canine section that swiftly reacted and arrested the suspect in a movie-style last week.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident that happened at Corner C Avenue and 4th Street in Mutare.

The suspect, Noni Wilk, had the drugs stashed in a bag.

“Seven police officers teamed up for a raid on Wilk, who deals in dangerous drugs. Detector dog handlers, Constable Mutumbe and Constable Jose carried out surveillance at Corner C Avenue and 4th Street in Mutare Central Business District, and observed that the accused person was dealing in dangerous drugs.

“The leading team, comprised of Constables Mutumbe and Masuko were already on the ground for further surveillance and monitoring activities of the accused person. After about 30 minutes on surveillance, they alerted other members that the accused person had arrived at his place of business, carrying out his illegal dealings.

“The canine team reacted swiftly with patrol and drug dogs, and they cordoned the area where the suspect and his clients were parking their vehicles. The officers introduced themselves to the occupants of the vehicles and their intention to carry out searches in their vehicles.

“Constable Jose cast his dog for a search on the parked vehicles, and the dog indicated the blue Nissan Sunny (Registration Number AAJ 2497) as the one in which the dangerous drugs were hidden. The dog jumped into the vehicle and indicated a box with 12 bottles of Benylin cough syrup stashed under the front passenger’s seat.

“The dog continued with the search in the vehicle, and recovered another 12 bottles of Benylin cough syrup stashed in the back seat cover. The accused person was arrested and escorted to Mutare Central Police Station for further management. The vehicle was impounded and the 24 bottles of Benylin cough syrup were handed over to CID Drugs and Narcotics as exhibits for further management. The recovered drugs have a street value of approximately US$213 or ZIG $5 760,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

He added: “We will leave no stone unturned to bring to book illegal drug dealers across the province. We have noticed that most of them operate in houses and their clients follow them there. We will continue to crack the whip on suppliers, buyers and sellers of illegal drugs.”
