The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) appointed by President Mnangagwa last month, has said it is working with Government and all relevant stakeholders to immediately bring closure to the Gukurahundi issues.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Thematic Committee on Peace & Security last week, NPRC deputy chairperson Mrs Lilian Chigwedere said Gukurahundi was the “top conflict” that the NPRC was dealing with.
She said it could not be ignored and there was need to foster national cohesion and development.
“Gukurahundi is one of the immediate issues this commission has to work on and quickly bring closure in order to bring unity, national cohesion and foster development.
“As a commission, we have to work hard to bring this issue to closure. It has been talked off for over 30 years now.
“Against this background, we are working with all relevant stakeholders and Government as we try to shelve this issue for good and move as one Zimbabwe,” said Mrs Chigwedere.
She said the commission remained guided by President Mnangagwa that the country had to openly speak about Gukurahundi in order to resolve the sensitive matter.
Plans were afoot to visit Rwanda to study how the country managed to bring closure on the Tutsi and Hutu genocide of 1994.
Mrs Chigwedere said NPRC would invite experts to enlighten the new commissioners on the work they should be doing.
She said the commission has so far this year managed to deal with 758 conflict cases throughout the country.
