NEW: No casualties in NRZ inferno

THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) says there were no fatalities or injuries after a fire broke out on Monday at the company’s mechanical workshops in Bulawayo.

The incident occurred around 1:30pm, leaving 15 decommissioned passenger coaches in various stages of damage.

In a statement released on X on Monday night, NRZ said investigations into the cause of the fire were still underway.

“The National Railways of Zimbabwe informs the nation of a fire outbreak at the company’s mechanical workshops in Bulawayo this afternoon. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported,” said NRZ.

“Investigations to determine the cause of the fire, which broke out around 1:30pm, are already underway and details will be shared in due course.

“Fifteen decommissioned coaches which were awaiting disposal as scrap were damaged.”
