Nsimbi takes charge of EMA board

THE government has appointed a 10-member Environmental Management Agency (EMA) board chaired by Metallon Gold corporate affairs executive Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi.

Other members of the new EMA board include the National University of Science and Technology director of communication and marketing, Felix Moyo, Sophia Nyamudeza (Vice Chairperson), Andrew Mlalazi, Nickel Mushangwe, Howard Mazaiwana, Barbara Rwodzi, Nelson Chanza, Irvin Kunene and Dorothy Chasi.

Environment, Water and Climate Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri appointed the new board on Monday in compliance with Section 11 of the Environmental Management Act (CAP 20:27).

The appointment followed the expiry of the term of office of the previous board. The new board is expected to give strategic directions that guide the operations of EMA as outlined in the Environmental Management Act (Chapter 20:27).

“We congratulate the chairman (Nsimbi) and the members of the board on this noble appointment and we welcome them to the EMA family. Together with all our stakeholders we will achieve a clean, safe and healthy environment,” said EMA in a statement.

EMA is a statutory board established by the government to ensure sustainable management of natural resources and protection of the environment, prevention of pollution and environmental degradation.

The agency was set up under the Environmental Management Act (Chapter 20:27) and operationalised in March 2003 through Statutory Instrument 103 of 2003.

Of late, waste management is one of the most topical environmental challenges in Zimbabwe’s urban centres, growth points as well as rural service centres. Over 800 litterbugs have been arrested since the beginning of the year. In the past, EMA has also slapped big companies with hefty fines for polluting the environment.
