A SOMBRE cloud hovered over Bulawayo’s Amphitheatre as hundreds of mourners gathered to pay tribute to the late Professor Bubuya Masola, a respected academic who left an indelible mark on Zimbabwe’s medical education landscape.

Professor Masola, a former Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), died last Wednesday at the age of 69. He will be laid to rest today at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo.
Friends, family, former students, and colleagues from NUST and the University of Zimbabwe, where he lectured for nearly 20 years, attended the emotional memorial service to honour his legacy.

Prof Masola joined NUST in 2018, bringing a wealth of experience to the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry.
Before that, he served as a Clinical Biochemist at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals from 1985 to 1986 before transitioning to academia at the University of Zimbabwe from 1986 to 2005.
He officially retired from university service in December 2020 but continued to serve on annual post-retirement contracts until his passing.

The crowd at the funeral spoke volumes of the impact he made both in and outside the lecture halls. A quiet giant in medical science, Prof Masola will be remembered for his dedication to training the next generation of health professionals
