NYAMAROPA Primary School was crowned this year’s mbira/marimba champions and walked away with a floating trophy and stationary for their sterling efforts at a colourful event held at Nyanga Country Club over the weekend.Held under the theme ‘Music is Therapeutic,’ the competition attracted12 primary and 4 secondary schools, which battled it out for the coveted trophy.
The competition song was: “Vasekuru Mapfeka Manyatera- Mahunzwepi Semune Mari.”
Crossdale High School came first in the secondary schools category which was overshadowed by the youthful primary schools category.
Speaking on the sidelines at the event, Arts and Culture district development and promotion officer, Mr Mukozhiwa, said the festival compliments the educational curriculum.
“Gone are the days when we depended on academics. This is a life-line for children. Our curriculum even encourages the employment of our pupils,” he said.
The festival is a brainchild of Solon Foundation that started it in 2008 after distributing mbira and marimba sets in all the participating schools.
The primary schools that participated at the annual event were Sanyamaropa, Kute, Manjanja, Zuvarabuda, Nyamhuka, Kazozo, Bumhira, Nyatate, Nyatsanga, Tombo and Mt Melleray.
Crossdale, Bumhira, Kute and Ruwangwe participated in the secondary schools category.
