AS domestic tourism continues to gain momentum in Zimbabwe, the country’s breath-taking natural attractions are drawing increasing numbers of travellers eager to discover hidden gems closer to home.
Among these is the picturesque Nyamungaya View in Honde Valley, a destination that offers spectacular scenery and an unforgettable journey through one of Zimbabwe’s most beautiful landscapes.
Perched along the escarpment overlooking the lush Honde Valley in the Eastern Highlands, Nyamungaya View commands panoramic vistas of rolling green mountains, sprawling tea estates, dense forests and fertile valleys stretching into neighbouring Mozambique.
The viewpoint, located near Mapokana, has become a favourite stop for both local and international visitors seeking nature, tranquillity and outstanding photographic opportunities.
The journey to Nyamungaya View is an adventure in itself.
Travellers from Mutare, about 130 kilometres away, drive along the scenic Mutare-Nyanga Road before branching off towards Honde Valley. As the road begins its dramatic descent of nearly 800 metres over approximately 20 kilometres, motorists are treated to winding roads that snake through the mountains, offering spectacular views at every turn.
The famous Mahwemasimike curves provide a thrilling drive while revealing the beauty of the valley below.
Along the route, visitors pass thriving banana plantations, smallholder farms, indigenous shrubs and towering trees that paint the mountainsides in varying shades of green. The cool mountain breeze and fresh air add to the refreshing experience, making every kilometre worthwhile.
On arrival at Nyamungaya View, visitors are rewarded with uninterrupted views of the vast Honde Valley, where green tea estates blend seamlessly with tropical vegetation, rivers and distant mountain ranges. On clear days, parts of neighbouring Mozambique can be seen from the viewpoint, highlighting the area’s unique geographical setting.
The location has become a favourite for photographers, hikers, nature lovers and treasure hunters.
Hiking enthusiasts can explore nearby trails that wind through forests and hills, while bird watchers can spot a variety of bird species that thrive in the Eastern Highlands.
The surrounding area also offers access to some of Zimbabwe’s iconic natural attractions, including Mutarazi Falls, Chipote Falls and the scenic Pungwe Gorge. River fishing, white-water rafting and guided nature walks further enrich the visitor experience.
For many tourists, however, simply standing at the viewpoint and admiring the endless landscape is enough to leave lasting memories.
Domestic tourist and farmer, Mr Aaron Chemvura, who hails from Masere Village in Honde Valley, but now lives in Mutare, said Nyamungaya View never loses its charm regardless of how many times one visits.
“Every visit feels different because nature is always changing. The winding roads, the mountains and the endless greenery create a peaceful atmosphere that is difficult to describe. Even though I grew up here, I still stop to admire the view whenever I return home because it remains one of Zimbabwe’s most beautiful places,” he said.
Another domestic tourist, Mr Paul Sigauke, originally from Aberfoyle in Honde Valley and now based in Mutare, said Nyamungaya View continues to attract both first-time visitors and returning travellers.
“Many people come here expecting beautiful scenery, but they leave amazed by the experience. The drive itself is part of the attraction, with its winding roads, banana plantations and mountain views. Even locals who have lived here for years never get tired of the scenery. The view has become a place that proudly showcases the natural beauty of Honde Valley,” he said.
The growing popularity of destinations such as Nyamungaya View reflects the steady rise of domestic tourism in Zimbabwe. More families, youth groups and adventure seekers are choosing to explore local destinations, discovering the country’s rich natural heritage while supporting local businesses and communities.
This growth is expected to receive an additional boost following the recent return of Air Zimbabwe to the Harare-London route after a 16-year hiatus. Launched under the theme: ‘Fly Direct, Experience Zimbabwe,’ the restoration of the direct route reconnects Zimbabwe with one of its key international tourism markets and marks an important milestone for both the tourism and aviation sectors.
The direct air link is expected to increase international arrivals, creating greater opportunities for visitors to explore attractions beyond the country’s traditional destinations.
Tourism operators believe the renewed connectivity will encourage more international travellers to venture into the Eastern Highlands, where destinations such as Nyamungaya View, Honde Valley, Nyanga National Park and surrounding communities offer authentic nature-based experiences.
With improved accessibility, tourists visiting Zimbabwe can combine wildlife safaris, cultural experiences and mountain tourism into one memorable holiday, further strengthening the country’s position as a leading tourism destination in Southern Africa.
