READY, steady, go!
Young Zimbabwean motorcyclist Victor Nyamupfukudza has vowed to fly his country’s flag high during this weekend’s highly-anticipated FIM Motocross of African Nations (MXOAN) Championships in Marrakech, Morocco.
The MXOAN is the only motorcycle Continental Championship in Africa, where riders from throughout Africa will push their limits in an exciting two-day competition which ends tomorrow.
And 10-year-old Nyamupfukudza arrived safely in Marrakech on Thursday more than ready to represent Zimbabwe at these prestigious African Championships.
Nyamupfukudza is Zimbabwe’s sole representative at the Championships where he will meet competitors from various countries from the African continent.
He is competing in the 65cc Class in which he is determined to take the top step on the podium at the business end of the competition tomorrow and bring a gold medal back home to Zimbabwe.
Competition starts with the opening heat this afternoon followed by two more heats tomorrow.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub from Morocco yesterday, Nyamupfukudza’s father and manager, Simbarashe Nyamupfukudza, said they are anticipating an action-packed weekend filled with some exciting races.
” . . .We safely arrived in Marrakech, we are on our way to the track preparing our bikes and registration later in the day.
“The weather is cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon, so far so good and yes Victor is more than ready to burn the track.
“He is determined to make himself and the nation proud by walking away with a gold medal on Sunday,” Simbarashe Nyamupfukudza said yesterday morning ahead of today’s 65cc Class opening heat before the main races tomorrow.
He said his son was looking at producing a solid performance in the 65cc Class in which he will battle it out against over 20 competitors from 10 nations, including defending champions South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and the host nation Morocco.
In fact, the event will see no fewer than eight African countries competing in the MX 50, MX 65, MX 125, MX 1, MX 2, Vets and Masters’ classes, as well as the WMX class for ladies.
Victor is now a force to be reckoned with on the motocross track. He started riding when he was five, competing with older boys.
He made his debut appearance at the continental Championships in Uganda in 2022 where, just like this time around, he was Zimbabwe’s sole representative in the 50cc Class.
Last year, at just nine, he was part of Team Zimbabwe for the annual continental Championships in Cape Town
