DEFENDING champion of the Old Mutual Westgate half marathon, Canisious Nyamutsita, says he is eyeing his best time at the annual race set for tomorrow.
The half marathon, which starts and ends at the Westgate Shopping Mall, has become one of the top road races in the country and this year is expected to feature athletes from Kenya.
There is also the 10km and 5km fun run.
Nyamutsita, who is also preparing for the Copenhagen 21km in Denmark on September 16, said he would go all out to try and defend his title.
“I think the race is going to be very competitive than last year. I understand there are some athletes coming from Kenya and it’s going to be difficult to defend the title.
“But I will do my best. I am hoping it’s going to also help with my preparations for the race in Denmark. I will get the chance to gauge where I am with my preparations,” said Nyamutsita.
The women’s title is up for grabs as reigning champion Betha Chikanga is competing in the 10km race to prepare for the Copenhagen half marathon as well.
“I am going to the Copenhagen half marathon in Denmark to be held on 16 September, so I chose 10km to ensure my body remains fit and to maintain speed.
‘’I wish to run well on Sunday with a good time.
“I am the champion but I want to run well in Denmark. I am leaving on September 11, that’s why I am not running 21km because there is no time for me to rest,” said Chikanga.
Other top athletes who have confirmed their participation include veteran long-distance runner Mike Fokorani.
“I will be participating just to raise my speed for an upcoming marathon on September 22 in South Africa.
“I am not very good at half marathon but I always fight for top 10.
“This week’s half marathon will help me to get enough speed for the marathon. I am fighting for a top 10 .
“I have been racing in the Westgate half marathon but this year it is going to be tough because the Kenyans are coming.
“I still feel the load from Comrades but I believe if I run races like the Westgate half marathon this will help me,” said Fokorani.
The prize money for the half marathon winners, which is the main event, remain pegged at $3 000 for both men and women.
