Nyandoro transforms trash into art

until November 29 at the National Art Gallery, will be running under the theme of seeing.
A Shona saying goes “Ndezvemeso muromo zvinyarare”, which  loosely translated means, “Food for the eye”. Thus, the eye sees a lot of things, which are, however, interpreted differently.
As such, Nyandoro’s ideas are based on the techniques and materials that he uses such as paper wrappings, empty plastic bottles and food cartons, which he transforms into beautiful pieces of art that comment on several social issues.
Nyandoro’s distinct works encourage social engagement and creates an enriching dialogue between tradition and modernity.
With an old adage that says, “Some people were born great, but others achieve greatness”, this aptly sums how creative and the kind of an artiste Nyandoro is. He makes use of traditional objects such as “saga” bags and apparels to bring out modern ideas that tackle aspects of our day-to-day activities like vending.
Creative as he is, Nyandoro goes a notch up by transforming them into two- and three-dimensional artworks.
His pieces of art also educate schoolchildren and the public on the art of disarded and found objects.  Nyandoro goes a step further by taking into account the need for recycling as he turned some of the discarded objects into pieces of art that people can relate to.
In addition, he also creates a single body of work from different materials but has the ability to create the impression of oneness in form.
content of his works is mainly of constructed portraits of individuals engaged in familiar everyday activities.
