Nyanga RDC receives refuse truck

DEVELOPMENT partners, Caritas, Cafod and the European Union recently donated a 15-tonne refuse truck worth $116 000 to Nyanga Rural District Council.

The donation is part of the pledge which the development partners had made in a joint project which they are pursuing with the local authority christened ‘Sanitation for Success’.

The handover ceremony was graced Cde Supa Mandiwanzira who is the Member of National Assembly for Nyanga South as well as Minister of Information, Communication and Technology and Courier Services as well as several dignitaries including traditional leaders.

The donation is in sync with Government’s economic blueprint, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation which exhorts local authorities to partner with developmental agencies to enhance service delivery for the ratepayers.

In his keynote address, Cde Mandiwanzira said: “With the new refuse truck, Nyanga Rural District Council is now able to ferry refuse three times a week, which is 200 percent more than was the case before. This shows that our council is geared towards improving service delivery.”

The Sanitation for Success programme intends to sustainably improve the living conditions, health, human dignity and the environment in poor urban and peri-urban areas of two small urban centres in Zimbabwe through integrated approach to sanitation.

The other beneficiary of this programme is Murehwa Rural District Council which was represented by its chief executive officer, Dr Gurajena at the function.

The purchase of the new truck will enable the tractor which had laboured to remove refuse for the council to be deployed to other critical areas such as road maintenance.

Prior to the Sanitation for Success programme, the same development partners had also landed a helping hand in another project which was dubbed Protracted Relief Programme which enabled public institutions such as Zuvarabuda Primary School, Nyangani High School and Nyamhuka Primary School to have water tanks for water storage. The donation will go a long way in sustaining the high level of cleanliness which the resort village of Nyanga has maintained to date.
