TUCKED away in the heart of the majestic Chimanimani Mountains, lies a hidden sanctuary where nature’s beauty thrives in perfect harmony — welcome to the Tessa’s Pool.
This enchanting natural oasis is situated about 5km from Chimanimani Tourism Village, and about 151km from Mutare.
Tessa’s Pool is one of the common tourism assets in Chimanimani, among others such as Nyakwaha and Haroni Botanical Reserves, Muhowa and Mukurupiri Waterfalls, Bridal Veil Falls, Eland Sanctuary, Mount Binga and Chimanimani National Parks.
Tessa’s Pool invites all who seek a peaceful retreat into its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings.
Surrounded by towering peaks, dramatic rock formations, and vibrant greenery, the site offers an idyllic escape that feels like stepping into a dream.
Whether you are dipping your toes in the cool, refreshing waters, enjoying a leisurely picnic by the water’s edge, or exploring the picturesque trails that wind through the mountains, this serene haven promises an experience like no other.
While not as expansive as Bridal Veil Falls, the true beauty of the pool lies in its dense, lush surroundings, which make it truly breathtaking.
The area is predominantly bordered by rocky Brachystegia woodland, with the sandy soils being strongly influenced by quartzite sands, home to some of the typical quartzite-endemic species.
As the sun rises and sets, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking canvas, casting vibrant hues across the sky and reflecting in the tranquil waters.
The friendly, welcoming locals are always happy to share their insights into the region’s fascinating flora and fauna, ensuring your visit is not just a getaway, but an unforgettable journey into the heart of this natural wonder.
But how did the name come about?
It is believed that back in the 1950s while John Ball was building the mountain hut in his spare time, his wife Lucy, was often left with baby Tessa at the refreshing waterfalls and pools at Outward Bound.
Later in the 60s, one of Ball’s friends, Ted Tucker, who was a surveyor, produced Tucker’s map of the mountains.
And in his map he named the waterfalls and pools — Tessa’s Pool — and it is still called that to this day.
To fully enjoy your visit to Tessa’s Pool, it is best to arrive early in the morning.
The early hours offer a tranquil atmosphere, and you will have a perfect opportunity to capture the stunning beauty of the sunrise.
The serene environment at this time of day allows you to experience the pool in its most peaceful state.
Since there are limited facilities nearby, it is a great idea to bring a picnic to enjoy by the poolside.
It is a perfect site for a private date.
You may fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings while relaxing by the water.
This will ensure you make the most of your visit, surrounded by the calm beauty of the area.
To navigate the rocky surfaces around the pool with ease, it is recommended to wear water shoes.
The grip will help you stay steady on the uneven ground, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience as you explore the area.
Before you head out, it is important to check the weather to ensure that conditions are favourable for your visit.
Being prepared for the elements will guarantee a more pleasant experience during your time at Tessa’s Pool.
To preserve the pool’s natural beauty, it is essential for visitors to follow sustainable practices that protect both the environment and wildlife.
This includes refraining from throwing litter and leaving it behind, ensuring all waste is taken with you, and avoiding the disruption of local flora and fauna.
Stay on designated trails to prevent soil erosion and preserve the integrity of the landscape.
Additionally, it is critical to avoid disturbing the delicate ecosystem around the pool, and refrain from picking plants or interacting with the wildlife.
