LONG distance runners are expected to battle it out in the Old Mutual 10km Fun Run scheduled for Dangamvura next weekend. The race will start and end at Dangamvura Shopping Mall. Chairperson of Manicaland Athletics Board, Joshua Matume, said preparations for the Mutare Old Mutual Fun Run were at an advanced stage.“Preparations for the 2016 Old Mutual Dangamvura 10km Fun Run are now at an advanced stage. The race will be held on May 8 in Dangamvura. The race should start and end at Dangamvura Shopping Mall,” said Matume.
He said besides the main race, there would also be a 5km back-up race for those who want to test their fitness.
Matume said all clubs, schools and tertiary institutions were invited to participate in this event. The athletes have been categorised in their respective age groups for the race.
“We are inviting clubs, schools and tertiary institutions. The Under-20 age group will be for all high school athletes. The Open category will be for athletes aged 20 years and above. The veteran’s age group ranges from 40 years up to 49, while the masters’ category will be for those aged 50 up to 59 years.
“Finally, the grandmasters’ category will be for those aged 60 and above,” he said.
Matume added that all those who want to test their fitness level are welcome as the 5km race is meant for them.
Registration fee details will be announced next week.
“Our sponsor, Old Mutual has promised us a good package for the event and great prizes will be won,” said Matume.
