Old Windsor Primary School to hold Mini-Cadet tournament

The three-day tournament will run from July 27 to 29 at the school and is expected to attract players from across the country and the Southern Africa region.
The tournament will see the young players born on January 1 1999 and those born on January 1 2001 competing in the cadet and mini-cadet boys and girls categories respectively.
Tournament co-ordinator, Emmanuel Kanengoni, said the event would be the first of its kind in Zimbabwe.
“We have always had the Zimbabwe championships concentrating on seniors.
“This is where we groom the kids to competition level. In our association we have had problems whereby there was no conveyer belt to give talent into the national team but now that we have this tournament, we have a conveyer belt into the national teams.
“We want to give sports a meaning and we have also put in R7000 for the kids. Previously they used to get certificates only,” said Kanengoni.
Kanengoni said the tournament was also a platform for the young players to enter into international competitions for the juniors.
“This is an entrance to cadetship all over the world. We have invited a lot of people to come.
“We have friends from SADC who have shown interest in the event.
“We have been speaking to Malawi, Zambia and Botswana but they have not yet confirmed their participation.
“We are also introducing a new computerised way of counting table tennis scores.
“We are taking advantage of the school confinement because teachers are the ones who understand about sports. Parents still need to be educated about sports,” said Kanengoni.
Registration is already underway and will be closed on July 25.
