SUPERSTAR, Oliver Mtukudzi left Mutare spellbound last Friday following an energetic five-star performance during the Catholic University Mutare satellite campus dinner dance.
The granddad of Zimbabwean music seems to be maturing with age like wine as his performance and vocals were on point and got everyone at the corporate function on their feet, breaking into dance throughout the show.
Although Tuku came with a small band, a three-man ensemble, the energy and sharp vocals exuded by the superstar was enlivening to the exhilaration of the small crowd that was in attendance.
He performed for nearly two hours non-stop, playing a mixed bag from his last album and some of his yester-year hit songs.
By the time he performed his second song, ‘Huroyi’ from his last offing released last year ‘Sarawoga,’ the entire house was already fired up and ready to dance the night away.
Tuku played songs like Kukanga Mhodzi Yembeu, Munondipasa Manyemwe, Dzandimomotera, Neria, Shamiso, Seiko and Tozeza Baba to mention a few, which all took people down the memory lane especially the elderly folk that could resonate with his yesteryear songs from the 1980s and 90s. The former president of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, Tinoziva Bere who was the guest of honour stole the show briefly when he was honoured with a belated birthday dedication song, ‘Huite Madiro.’
The renowned lawyer had a cameo moment dancing with the superstar and got the house into frenzy after he surprisingly displayed some impressive dancing skills to the shock of most who had always taken him to be the quiet type.
Having embarked on his musical journey in 1975, Tuku, who recently celebrated 40-years of Tuku Music with a big bash at his Pakare Paye Arts Centre, announced that in January next year, he would bring the celebrations to Mutare.
His manager, Sam Mataure, said the Tuku Music 40th anniversary celebrations confirmed that Tuku would definitely come to Mutare in January at a date still to be advised.
