Olympic hockey squad named

THE Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) has named the provisional squad for the Youth Olympic Qualifiers set for Zambia early next year. The provisional five-a-side teams of 28 boys and 19 girls will be trimmed to 15 each soon after the festive season.Girls are coached by Looks Lowe who is assisted by Anthony Five while Prince Mwale is in charge of the boys. Zimbabwe played an international friendly against the hosts Zambia at Arundel School last weekend as part of preparations for the forthcoming games next year.

The boys were whitewashed in all three matches played, losing 0-7, 1-4 and 2-8 while the girls only managed two draws of 4-4 and lost two 3-9 and 1-4 respectively.

HAZ spokesperson Humprey Chindungo said the Zambians had come in as underdogs but they dominated play all round.

“There is a lot of work to be done by the Zimbabweans if we are to make a mark at the qualifiers next year in Zambia,” he said.
