BULAWAYO teams, Old Miltonians (OMs) and Matabeleland Warriors recorded wins over fellow city sides at Hartsfield as the Intercity Rugby League got underway yesterday.
Warriors saw off Bulldogs 50-0 in the first match of the day, a fixture where they led 22-0 heading into half-time. Bulldogs managed to put up a good fight during the early stages of the encounter but curved in as the match progressed allowing Warriors to cruise to an easy victory.
OMs held on to defeat Highlanders 24-10 with the former having started off the match on a bright note with their first try scored by Thabani Sakupwanya. There were further tries by skipper Jason Mackay who crossed the whitewash twice while flyhalf Mwandile Maoche booted in one conversion to give his side a 17-0 lead heading into half-time. Sakupwanya scored his second try of the match with Maoche kicking in the conversion.
Highlanders fought back hard in the second half with a try from lock Mbongeni Ndlovu and fullback Lesley Ncube. OMs have a lot of disciplinary issues to deal with as they had four of their players shown yellow cards which saw them spending 10 minutes in the sin bin each.
In another match played at Mutare Sports Club, the home side beat Gweru Sports Club 52-10. Matches only took place in Bulawayo as well as Mutare yesterday as clubs in Harare are said to be still not ready. Action in the capital is only starting on 6 May.
When the league resumes, Warriors are playing Highlanders while OMs clash with Bulldogs when the league continues on Saturday.
