On the Spotlight with DJ Prince Eskhosini: DJ Sweeto

PARTIES and other events of enjoyment require a level of artistry to steer attendees into a frenzy or risk being booed off stage, and one DJ who has mastered the art of engaging fun lovers with exceptional wheel-spinning is DJ Sweeto, our focal point this week.

Below is a conversation we had with him:

Q. Who is DJ Sweeto?
A. I was born and raised in Bulawayo. I had a passion for music from a young age and attended Sacred Heart Home (SHH) for my early education before moving on to Milton High School. It was during this time that I discovered my love for deejaying. I then started performing at school gigs, weddings, house parties, and afternoon sessions, honing my craft and gaining experience.

Q. As a DJ, who are some of the notable names you’ve rubbed shoulders with?

A. This has been quite an ultimate thrill ride for me as I have found myself sharing the stage with renowned South African artistes such as DJ Cyndo, DJ Zinhle, Splash, DJ Tira, and the late Zahara in different gigs.

Q. Besides deejaying, what else do you do?

A. I’m more than just a DJ. I’m also passionate about event management and creating memorable experiences for people. I have ventured into photography, organising and managing events, and slowly but surely, I have been growing.

Q. Tell us how you got into photography.

A. During a period of unfortunate looting that occurred in the city, my deejaying equipment was stolen from Mqombothi Sports Bar, leaving me with only two basebins. I then made a bold decision to try something different. Drawing on my love for visual art, I sold the remaining equipment and purchased a camera to kickstart my career in photography.

Q. How do you balance your packed portfolio?

A. It’s not easy juggling all of these, but I have found a way to balance them. During the day, I focus on my photography projects, capturing the beauty of the world through my lens. At night, that’s when I unleash my deejaying skills at various clubs, keeping the crowd dancing and entertained.

Q. How has it been working with fellow wheel spinner, DJ Khumz?

A. We have collaborated on several production projects, and our partnership has been met with great success. I’m excited about our work together, and we are yet to do more this year.

Q. If there’s one thing you wish to change within the music sector, what would that be?

A. My wish is to stop promoters from bringing in acts from out of the country and promote our local acts.
