One killed, 7 injured in Shamva violence

the officer-in-charge of Shamva Police Station. The injured were taken to Shashi Hospital in Bindura. Luxmore Chivambu’s body was taken to Bindura Provincial Hospital mortuary.
Chivambu is believed to have died as a result of injuries sustained in the alleged assault.
Among the injured are 51-year-old Martha Chidzonga who sustained a broken arm and Shepherd Hudye.
Angry residents yesterday stormed the police station, demanding to beat up the officer-in-charge who was only identified as Inspector Shumba.
Insp Shumba reportedly led nine armed policemen who assaulted workers at Canterbury Mine with baton sticks accusing them of harbouring the thief.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena confirmed the incident yesterday, saying investigations were underway.
“I can confirm that one person has died and we are investigating the case and we will leave no stone unturned. We will come out with the full details soon,” he said.
According to witnesses, Insp Shumba, in the company of nine police officers, descended on Canterbury Mine Company at around 8pm and demanded to be given back his wife’s wallet. After failing to locate the thief, it is alleged, the policemen started beating up people indiscriminately with baton sticks and rifle butts and took suspects to Shamva Police Station for interrogation.
By last night, Insp Shumba, his wife and the nine policemen were detained at Shamva Police Station.
