LONDON. — Jose Mourinho has opened the door for Didier Drogba to have another year as a player at Chelsea — while Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes his goalscoring ace Sergio Aguero could be the best in Europe.
Chelsea maintained their lead at the top of the English Premier League with an easy 3-0 victory over Tottenham, but City remain firmly in the hunt after Aguero’s double helped sink sorry Sunderland 4-1.
Chelsea legend Drogba (36) produced a stunning performance at Stamford Bridge, scoring one and making another. Drogba was allowed to leave the club in 2012 after winning the Champions League, but Mourinho brought him back on a one-year deal.
“I don’t know if this will be Didier’s last season,” said Mourinho. “I want him to stay, the club wants him to stay. It will be his decision when he wants to stop as a player. Something personal.” Mourinho has already said there will be a place on the Chelsea staff for Drogba when he does retire.
But he added: “It’s remarkable what he is doing. First of all he’s a team player. He has the mentality of the old days — not selfish, not vain, a humble guy who plays and fights for the team. Fantastic.
“When he is on the bench and comes on for the last few minutes because the team needs someone to hold the ball or defend set-pieces, he does that with the same enthusiasm and spirit as he does when he starts a game. I knew the potential he had when I brought him back. I was expecting this — not even a doubt.”
City are six points behind Chelsea after Aguero scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season. Stevan Jovetic and Pablo Zabaleta also scored and Pellegrini said: “I don’t know if there is a better striker in Europe than Aguero. — The Daily Express.
