adminwill be held on Sunday with participants set to take part in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 3 000m, 5 000m, 10 000m, 4x100m, 4×200 and 4x400m while in the field events participants will compete in high jump, triple jump, javelin, discus and long jump.
UZ director for sports and recreation, Life Chemhere said they have sent invitations to athletes in different provinces with registration already underway and will be closed on Sunday.
“We are expecting 2 000 athletes and these are drawn from schools, clubs, colleges and universities. We have got confirmation from as far as Bulawayo, Uzumba-Maramba-Pfun-gwe, Kwekwe and we have got clubs like WWS and Chamber of mines.
“This is an event athletes can’t afford to miss because we take this as a season opener. For example, universities will have their games on March 24.
“It’s a platform for Zusa (Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association), provincial teams and clubs to prepare for their subsequent events,” said Chemhere.
Chemhere said they are looking forward to a better and bigger event this year.
“Last year we had around 800 to 900 athletes but last year things were not well and we did not market our event well but we believe this year’s event is going to be an event with a difference, people are a little bit settled financially.
“We also have a lot of clubs that have been mushrooming and different organisations have begun appreciating the essence of sports,” said Chemhere.
