Wheat harvesting is at full throttle countrywide with farmers having so far harvested 40 591 tonnes of wheat from 7 548 hectares.

About 10 115 tonnes of wheat have been delivered to the Grain Marketing Board while 20 296 tonnes have been marketed through Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange (ZMX) and other buyers.

About 70 percent of wheat is in good condition and 30 percent is in a fair condition. The majority of wheat is at the hard dough stage.

In his weekly report for last week, Agriculture Rural Development Advisory (ARDAS) acting chief director Mr Leonard Munamati encouraged farmers to guard against quelea birds and ensure that their crop receives adequate water.

He also urged farmers to prepare standard fireguards around their fields and to ensure that they finish harvesting by the end of October to avoid early rains.

Field days and visits for the provision of best agronomic practices are ongoing. The Government has mobilised 300 combine harvesters and driers to facilitate harvesting.
