WITH 18 years of experience in sales consultancy in the transport industry, Ms Nyarai Muchinapaya (44) finally took the plunge into entrepreneurship to follow her long-time dream, thanks to her love for event planning, especially weddings.
In 2021, she launched Sparkle Caterers, which took off well and is now one of the most successful catering businesses around.
Starting small, Ms Muchinapaya catered to family and friends over the weekends while holding onto her full-time job.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback, which translated into repeat and new business for her, convinced her to take up entrepreneurship full-time and follow her true calling.
Within a short time, Sparkle Caterers has successfully expanded into the corporate world, providing bites for exhibitions, meetings and staff parties.

Ms Muchinapaya attributed her passion for the catering business to her humble beginnings, where she would prepare samosas and fritters to earn a few cents from selling them to her colleagues. It was only after a dream-filled sleep that she realised that she had a passion for event planning and finger food catering for events like weddings and family gatherings.
Ms Muchinapaya works from her home in Parklands where she transformed her kitchen into an office space.
Running Sparkle Caterers wasn’t smooth sailing and Ms Muchinapaya had to overcome significant hurdles, including capital insufficiency, to procure quality equipment. But looking at it conversely, such an obstacle opened her eyes to a market gap for freshly made finger foods.
Ms Muchinapaya leapt deep into research and planning and finally registered Sparkle Caterers in 2017. The following year, she enhanced her skills by enrolling in snack-making training.

“Just like any business, months of preparation revealed numerous obstacles, including a lack of capital to source quality equipment for decorations. This challenge led me to identify a gap in the market for freshly made finger foods. Leveraging my passion for cooking. I researched and planned tirelessly and then in 2017, I registered Sparkle Caterers and in 2018, I underwent training in snack making,” she said.
Ms Muchinapaya said what sets her services apart from others is that she ensures her clients are up to date with what offers she has for the day, and her services are affordable depending on the platter the client wants.

“My services are unique in the sense that I offer discounts when clients book 48 hours prior, free deliveries to those in town and nearby, not forgetting that the services I offer are very affordable. From US$7, one can get a platter. Room for negotiating with my clients is a priority, which makes it easy for me to reach a wider range of clients in the community. They spread the word that I am an understanding person.”
Ms Muchinapaya urges aspiring entrepreneurs not to let procrastination hinder their dreams.
“Take the first step and work tirelessly towards your goals,” she advises, embodying the entrepreneurial spirit that has guided her journey.
Apart from making finger food, Muchinapaya also offers classes for finger food preparation and is also into baking cakes, among other things.
Ms Muchinapaya did her primary education at Mahlabezulu Primary and her secondary at Minda High School before doing her tertiary at Bulawayo Polytechnic.
