TOP male and female basketball clubs in Harare are poised for an eventful weekend when they clash in the Heroes Day basketball tournament starting today.
The tournament will be held at Prince Edward School with the first match set to get underway as early as 8am.It is part of a mammoth line-up of sporting events being held nationwide to commemorate Zimbabwe’s fallen heroes through sport.
Chairperson of the organising committee Tendai “T Buns” Zhakata said they were working flat out to make the event a success.
“We are always under pressure to ensure that whatever event we organise lives up to its billing and this is no different. We want this annual event to be something everyone can enjoy,” said Zhakata.
Household names in local basketball – JBC, Cameo, Raiders, Hustles, Foxes, Vixens, Platinum Balers – are expected to battle it out on the courts in this tournament exclusive to Harare clubs.
“Since we are still developing and growing, we are limiting participation to Harare teams but next year we are sure we will have grown bigger to incorporate other provinces,” he said.
The winning teams will walk away with a floating trophy while there are also prizes for excelling individuals.
“To date, 20 clubs have already confirmed their participation in this weekend’s tournament but we are expecting that number to rise before the festival commences,” Zhakata said.

Participation is free for all clubs and interested non-affiliated players can also join in the fun.
“Everyone is welcome and we urge everyone, especially the youth to come in their numbers as sports are another crucial way the youth can empower themselves.
“We also call upon the corporate world to come in and rally behind us by sponsoring and supporting this tournament to enable it to be more exciting,” Zhakata said.
