RICHARD Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani are currently operating at the peak of their powers.
Zimbabwe’s seam attack has ranked among the best of the 12 Full Member teams at home since the start of last year, and the two quicks have been at the forefront of that rise.
Ngarava belongs to a select group of specialist fast-bowling captains, only the second for his country after Heath Streak, who captained in 21 Tests and 68 ODIs between 2000 and 2004.
Muzarabani became only the fourth Zimbabwe cricketer to play in the IPL earlier this year after being a part of the RCB set-up during their victorious 2025 campaign as a replacement for Lungi Ngidi.
The two form the core of the seam bowling attack, and have been influential in their side’s scattered success in recent times, at times leading the way individually or as a pair, or playing second-fiddle to Sikandar Raza and others.
The duo’s peak comes at an interesting time for India ahead of the first T20I at Harare Sports Club today.
Their recent struggles against hard lengths were exposed in Ireland and England, where longer boundaries aided the bowlers.
Both Muzarabani and Ngarava are good exponents of the same, given their height and high release points, and that could be the key battle in the upcoming series.
The duo has bagged 78 wickets together in Tests wherein they have both opened the bowling, 62 in ODIs and 98 in T20Is.
On that front, they form Zimbabwe’s most successful bowling pair in each of the three formats.
They have collectively bagged 32 of the 59 wickets across their last three Test wins (two against Bangladesh and one against Afghanistan).
Since the start of 2025, Zimbabwe seam attack ranks fourth in terms of averages in home T20Is among the 12 full-member teams, and fifth in both Tests and ODIs.
That’s a significant standing for a team that’s ranked 10th in Tests, 11th in ODIs and 12th in T20Is.
Muzarabani and Ngarava have been at the forefront, with excellent numbers across formats (and across conditions) in the time-frame.
While there’s not much to look into in the two longer formats in 2026, with a solitary Test and three ODIs played, their seam bowling upgrade in T20Is of late warrants a deeper look.
Zimbabwe seamers have had three individual four-wicket hauls in eight T20Is against full-member teams in 2026 (two by Muzarabani and one by Ngarava); they had as many in 87 matches between 2018 and 2025.
The overall averages and strike-rates too, have had a spike.
Their progress to Super 8s at the T20 World Cup 2026 was a major highlight. They topped their group in the first round courtesy of an unbeaten run with clinical wins over Australia and Sri Lanka.
While Ngarava featured in just three games, Muzarabani was the joint -highest wicket-taker until the Super 8s, with 13 scalps at 14.46.
That included a Player of the Match performance (4/17) against Australia.
Fifteen of the 19 wickets bagged by the pair at the T20 World Cup came via the hard-length or the bouncer.
Of the 92 seamers in action in the tournament, only Jason Holder and Kyle Jamieson had a higher average release point than Muzarabani, while Ngarava ranked 11th in this list.
With a line-up featuring Brad Evans, another bowler in that league, Zimbabwe seam attack had the highest average release point among the 20 teams in the competition, followed by England and South Africa respectively.
With those two in form and their template corresponding to India’s recent struggles, Zimbabwe have a great chance to make a statement against the three-time T20 World Cup winners. – Cricbuzz
