TWO motorists, who sought to bribe police officers at a roadblock, have been fined $100 000 each.

Jerald Dzvene (31) and Niclus Mwela (29) appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate, Batsirai Madzingira, who found them guilty of bribery.

Mwela and Dzvene appeared in court separately.

They were fined $100 000 each or seven months in prison.

Prosecuting, Clever Nyapfani told the court that on June 22 this year, along the Harare-Chirundu Highway, Mwela offered a gift, or consideration, to police officer, Florence Chivanga, as an inducement, or reward.

He offered her US$4, as an inducement, contravening Section 7(1) of the Road Motor Transport Act.

In another case heard by the same magistrate, it was proved the police were manning a roadblock, along the Harare-Chirundu Road, when they stopped Dzvene, who was driving a Toyota vehicle (registration number AFA 3913).

The police officers inspected the motor vehicle and found out he was carrying nine passengers.

He was advised that he was under arrest for carrying passengers using a non-public service vehicle.

Dzvene then handed a bribe of US$5 to the police officer, Nyasha Mhuru, so that he could be released.

Mhuru subsequently arrested him.
