The Embassy of Palestine has partnered with the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) by committing to sponsor an award in memory of the late Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat.
The Yasser Arafat Reporter of the Year Award will be incorporated into this year’s National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) as a way of highlighting foreign relations issues and press freedom violations in Palestine and the Gaza strip.
This followed a meeting held yesterday between the Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamer Almassri and the ZUJ to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Ambassador Almassri said in a statement that he highly appreciated freedom of speech and had already considered himself as part of the ZUJ family.
ZUJ president Michael Chideme thanked Ambassador Almassri for the support that the embassy pledged.
“The meeting also resolved to strengthen relations between ZUJ and journalists organisations in Palestine,” said Ambassador Almassri. “Part of which will include sending a delegation of Zimbabwean journalists to Palestine and Jerusalem for cultural exchange programmes.”
