PALESTINIAN Ambassador to Zimbabwe Dr Tamer Almassri has condemned the ongoing torture, abuse and systematic killing of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody.
In a statement, Ambassador Almassri described the treatment of Palestinian prisoners as the “worst in history”, and said there are alarming reports of deaths, torture and forced disappearances that continue to occur.
He called on the international community to take immediate action against Israel’s flagrant violations of international law.
Ambassador Almassri said the alarming number of Palestinian detainees who remain unaccounted for and the numerous cases of autopsies revealed that the majority of detainees who have died did so as a result of deliberate medical neglect, torture or a combination of both.
“What we are witnessing is a systematic effort by Israeli authorities to break the spirit of the Palestinian people,” he said.
“The overwhelming majority of these prisoners are subjected to inhumane conditions. Many are dying in Israeli prisons. The international community must hold Israel accountable for these crimes.”
As of today, over 10 400 Palestinians have been imprisoned in Israeli jails, with 87 female prisoners and at least 320 children among them.
Alarmingly, over 3 300 are being held without trial or charges, including 95 children and 22 women.
Ambassador Almassri decried Israel’s refusal to provide any information on the whereabouts or conditions of detainees from Gaza, making the situation even more dire.
“The Israeli authorities are not only attacking the prisoners but also terrorising their families. The cruelty they endure is unimaginable,” Ambassador Almassri said.
“These individuals are not just prisoners; they are martyrs who have been pushed to the brink of death by an occupying force that systematically violates their rights. We cannot stand by and allow these crimes to continue. The lives of our prisoners matter, and the international community must ensure that justice prevails.”
