ZIMBABWEAN born Panashe Madanha, 18, has become the first ever Zimbabwean born player to break into Australia’s top-flight league, The A-League.
While Madanha had made two substitute appearances prior to his debut start and full game against Perth Glory last Monday, it is important to note that he came on as a pacey right winger, yet in his full debut match, he played as a right back.
The youngster was a thorn in the flesh for the Newcastle Jets defence when he came on as a substitute in the Australian Cup Round 9.
Perth Glory interim coach, Carl Veart, trusted Madanha with the responsibility of taking over the right wingback position in place of injured Spaniard Javi Lopez, who had muscle pain.
After the match Veart described Madanha as “outstanding”, and the “fastest player in our team”.
The coach said although the right back position was not Madhanha’s natural position, the youngster played positively.
The player came to Australia at the age of 4 from Zimbabwe after his father secured a more rewarding job down Under, while his mum is a registered nurse in Adelaide.
He played winter football and summer cricket like most kids, but he loved cricket and athletics more.
His father and uncle, who is twins, encouraged him to take football seriously, and they are now a big influence in his career.
Panashe said:
“You go to games as a kid and dream of one day playing at the top level for your hometown team.”
His extended family back in Harare send him encouraging messages.
However, Madanha is not happy that Zimbabwe is currently suspended by FIFA, as it robs him of a chance to take part in international competitions.
He longs to one day represent his home country when the suspension is lifted.
