This National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund-sponsored youth and community development initiative, called The Perfect Storm, seeks to revive the culture of street dance, maintaining the inherent township cultural heritage and to occupy the passionate, yet bored youngsters away from criminal activities.
Sithembiso Moloi, who established the initiative with fellow dancer Tebogo Chauke, invited six groups to showcase their skills and to entertain people.
It featured City Boys and The VIPs from the Vaal, The Shakers and Movers from Mapetla, Perfect Storm from Protea Glen, NYTP from all around Soweto and Dlala Mapantsula from the West Rand. — Sowetan.
Pushing their bodies to the limit and feet moving as fast as light, each crafty move was met with cheers and whistles from the fascinated crowd.
Among the dancers was 13-year-old Brian Motsapi, the pint-sized member of The VIPs. Motsapi, who was also the youngest professional participant of the day, said he started dancing with his uncle’s group when he was eight years old. “My uncle saw the talent I had and decided to recruit me into the group.”
His uncle, Thomas Motsapi, the choreographer and manager of the group, said the youngster’s first performance with The VIPs coincided with the group winning a dance competition.
The Grade 8 pupil, who practises three days a week and performs on weekends, said he was not bothered by his busy schedule. “Everything has its own time. I have my things planned out. When I have homework, I ask to be excused from practice.”
After completing high school, Brian said he would take a gap year for his dancing, then study to become a doctor. — Sowetan.
